Who I work with

Hands-on owners who’d rather be running their business than wrestling with it.

I’m Kay, a bookkeeper based in Morpeth. I work with small businesses across Northumberland, Newcastle and further afield, mostly owners who do a bit of everything themselves. If the books are the bit that gets pushed to Sunday night, you’re in the right place.

I work in Xero or FreeAgent, and I hold Xero’s Level 3 specialist certification. If you’re on something else, or still on a spreadsheet, that’s fine too. We can talk about what suits you.

Kay Sandford, bookkeeper at NorthernStar Bookkeeping in Morpeth

Micropubs and small hospitality venues

You’re pulling pints, ordering stock, covering shifts and keeping the regulars happy. The numbers can wait. Until they can’t.

  • Get your till or card reader talking to your books, and record cash takings the same way every day
  • Run payroll for your team, part-timers included
  • Keep an eye on the VAT threshold as takings grow
  • Keep each income stream separate, whether that’s food, drink, rooms or events

Makers and market traders

Craft fairs, markets, online orders and the odd wholesale order. Lots of small sales from lots of places, and a box of receipts to match.

  • Bring all your sales into one place, so you know what you’re actually making
  • Keep on top of materials and stall costs
  • See which products and markets are worth your time

Sole traders and tradespeople

You’re out on jobs all day. Invoicing and receipts happen in the van, if they happen at all.

  • Get invoices out and keep track of who owes you
  • Keep receipts and expenses in order as you go
  • Get ready for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, if it applies to you

Freelancers

You’re good at what you do. Bookkeeping isn’t it, and that’s OK.

  • Keep your income and expenses tidy all year
  • Know what to set aside for tax
  • Spend less time on admin and more on paid work

New businesses

Just getting started? This is the best time to get your books right, before habits set in.

  • Set up your software properly from day one
  • Build simple routines that take minutes, not hours
  • Check you’re on track with a one-off Bookkeeping Health Check

Where I work

I’m based in Morpeth and work with businesses across Northumberland and Newcastle. I’m happy to meet you in person locally, at your premises or somewhere handy. If you’re further away, I work fully online, and you’ll get exactly the same service.

What I don’t do

I’m a bookkeeper, not an accountant. I don’t prepare year-end accounts, Self Assessment or Corporation Tax returns. I’m happy to work alongside your accountant, so your books arrive in good shape and their bill doesn’t creep up.
